Personnel Needed: PhD and Masters.
Title of Position: PhD and Masters in ecological modeling
Supervisor: Brian Leung

Location: Department of Biology & McGill School of Environment, McGill University
Project Title: Predictive modelling under uncertainty: applications to environmental issues.
Student will perform ecological modelling to investigate ecological and management-related questions for invasive species. Invasive species have been identified as one of the five main drivers of global change by the Millennium ecosystem assessment, and cause damages estimated at over 100 Billion dollars annually. While broad generalizations can be made on the impact of global drivers, detailed and specific predictions for management decisions are lacking. Such predictions are made difficult by limited information, time, resources and communication, which affect virtually all environmental issues. ÿIn an increasingly complex world with various global drivers producing environmental, social and economic impacts, understanding and dealing with uncertainty is crucial. Addressing limitations that result in uncertainty will be a highly transferable and sought-after skill-set in any environmental field. Students will develop and apply the modelling skills needed to address some of the key challenges associated with uncertainty and real-world limitations. Students will make ecological predictions and explore management options for invasive species. There will also be the opportunity to engage in field work in freshwater lake or coastal marine systems, depending on interest and experience.

Students wanted - Biodiversity Project
Excuse me while I scan that tree – the (DNA) barcode of life.
[posted 28 October 2011]
I am looking for students interested in exploring new methods for describing biodiversity using DNA barcoding (http://ibol.org/).
This research will be important for describing community structure and assessing the impact of climate change on ecosystem function.
Requirements include excellent taxonomic skills and an enthusiasm for field work, which will be conducted at McGill's Gault Nature Reserve, Mont Saint Hilaire. Familiarity with molecular sequencing techniques would be an advantage, as would strong analytical skills.
Project start date: spring 2012 and continuing over the summer.
Students interested in developing an Honours research project are encouraged to apply.
Interested students should contact Dr Davies (j.davies@mcgill.ca), sending a copy of their CV and a brief statement of interest.

Summer Positions in Cell Biology
Two positions are open for summer projects in Dr. Fagotto lab.
Candidates are expected to apply for a USRA/SURA award. We are looking for students with outstanding academic achievements (cGPA > 3.8), strong motivation to pursue scientific research, and a good background and interest in Cell Biology/Biochemistry.
One of the projects will be essentially theoretical and will involve learning molecular modeling, which would be taught by an expert collaborator. The candidate is expected to have some background in theoretical biology/computer science.
The second project will couple Cell Developmental Biology and Proteomics. All required techniques will be taught during the internship. Prerequisite is excellent manual skills and a sense for precise, clean work.
Please contact francois.fagotto@mcgill.ca
