- Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Postgraduate Scholarships
Open to Canadians/Landed Immigrants only. Forms are available in September. Students should apply through their current (or former, for those not currently attending university) department, which sets internal deadlines earlier than those stated by NSERC.

- CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) Doctoral Awards
Open to Canadians/Landed Immigrants only. Forms are available in September. Apply directly to the agency. Forms are available in September.
- CIHR CGS (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) Master's Awards
Open to Canadians/Landed Immigrants only. Forms are available in October.

- Quebec Provincial Scholarships (Fonds Nature et Technologies for Natural Sciences and Engineering or FRSQ for Health Sciences)
Open to Canadians/Landed Immigrants only. There is an additional Quebec residence requirement of 12 months. Forms are available in September. Students should apply through their current department or directly to the agency if they are no longer attending university.

McGILL AWARDS
- Richard H. Tomlinson Fellowships
Open to incoming graduate students at the Master's, Doctoral and Postdoctoral levels. Application is by invitation only. Deadlines fluctuate for this award - please contact Ancil Gittens for dates. Requirements for eligibilty are subject to change. Please see details on Richard H. Tomlinson Fellowship on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.
- Vineberg Fellowship in Freshwater Biology/Limnology
Awarded to an outstanding McGill graduate student conducting field-based research on freshwater communities and ecosystems. Preference will be given to PhD students who are beyond their qualifying year and who will not hold a major scholarship during the year of the Vineberg award. Value: $8000, awarded once per recipient. Application: Submit a complete CV, transcripts, and a 1-page statement of current research activities (electronic and hard-copy) to Dr. Irene Gregory-Eaves, Department of Biology.
- Biology Department Entrance Award
An entrance bonus is offered to graduate students who will be pursuing research in the Biology Department. The award will be in the amount of $2,500 for M.Sc. students and $5,000 for Ph.D. students, and will be paid as a supplement to the minimum level of support as defined by the Department. No forms are required. Non-renewable.
- Arthur Willey Memorial Fellowship
One award valued at $2,500 is offered to a selected incoming graduate student each year. The award will be paid as a supplement to the minimum level of support as defined by the Department. No forms are required. Non-renewable.
- Philip Carpenter Fellowship in Biology
Two awards valued at $2,000 each are offered to incoming graduate students each year. The award will be paid as a supplement to the minimum level of support as defined by the Department. No forms are required. Non-renewable.
To ensure eligibility for any of the awards above, the student's completed application to the Biology department graduate program must be received prior to February 1st. Except for the Tomlinson Fellowship, no additional forms are required. In addition, a Biology professor must indicate his or her financial and academic commitment to the student by completing the required Support Form. The principal criteria for selection are demonstrated academic and research strengths, and potential for outstanding research achievement.
Applicants are encouraged to apply for a scholarship before coming to McGill. Possession of a scholarship increases the probability of acceptance.
Travel Awards
- GREAT/GTC Travel Awards:
GREAT (Graduate Research Enhancement and Travel Awards) are given to students who will travel to present their research at a scientific conference. The amount of the award is $500, and students are eligible to receive one award for the duration of their graduate program. For more details and to apply for this award, complete the Application and submit to Graduate Studies Office. - BGSA Travel Grant:
Please see the Grants section of the BGSA website for details. - Research Travel Awards:
Research travel awards are given to students to fund research travel. The amount for the award for 2011/2012 will be approximately $1,000, depending on fund availability. Information for this award is provided on the application form.
*NEW - Dissertation Year Subsidy
- A limited number of awards are available (Winter 2012) for students in their final year. Designed for students who routinely have been required to subsidize their studies through teaching, these awards are intended to replace a teaching assistantship for one semester and thus allow the student to focus on writing his/her dissertation.
