Database of freshwater fishes of Chile
Freshwater fishes of Chile are characterized by low diversity yet high level of endemism due to the geographical isolation of the country. Most of these fishes are listed in the red list of endangered species or are insufficiently known. With a group of experts from Chile we are creating the first national geographical database to facilitate the access to the available distributional information from seminal works, peer-review papers, databases of museums in US and Europe, reports and non-scientific sources. This resource will help identify knowledge gaps, notice temporal and geographical patterns and will stimulate more research and conservation actions. The database will comply with international standards and will join broader international initiatives such IABIN and will be publicly available on the internet.

Deliverables
As a first step we are preparing two deliverables: i) the most current and complete database of records of free-ranging freshwater fishes of Chile, and ii) a peer review paper making the database public and conducting the first analyses.

Participants
This project was started as a literature review by Cristián Correa in 2003. He collected written records from various sources including nearly all peer-review literature, governmental agency reports (e.g. FIPs, FNDRs, FONDECYSs), many environmental impact assessment studies (EIAs), and several internal reports. An additional layer of information for salmonids was provided by Correa and Andrea Bravo through an interview survey. Correa is the curator of the database and coordinator of the project. Additional information was provided by Brian Dyer who has conducted fish prospecting throughout the country. He is also responsible of assessing the broad-scale distributional patterns that may emerge from our database and compare them to the current hypothesis on fish biogeography which is one of his areas of expertise. Gonzalo Gajardo and Carlos GarcíaDeLeaniz, through their Darwin project, have contributed with abundant and detailed fish capture data for the Lakes District region. They are also facilitating infrastructure to aid the development of the database. Claudio Meier has recently committed to review additional EIAs (extract data & index into the database) and critically assess their adequacy. Horacio Samaniego is revising the architecture, interoperability and functionality of the database to optimize its usage, meet additional requirements, and ensure it meets international standards for wide distribution. He will also contribute writing grant proposals. CONAMA has facilitated access to geographical information and has offered additional in-kind resources. Several other unconfirmed participants will contribute with fresh information, reviewing records already indexed, consolidating the contribution of major labs, writing grant proposals, et cetera.

Funding
We appreciate the support of the Canadian International Development Research Center through a Canada-Latin America and the Caribbean Research Exchange Grant awarded to Correa (McGill University; PI), Dr. Andrew Hendry (McGill University), Irene Gregory-Eaves (McGill University), Brian Dyer (UMAR) and Gonzalo Gajardo (ULA). This grant provided financial support for both Correa’s empirical research and to promote the database project in Chile through a presentation at the VI Reunión de la Sociedad de Limnología de Chile and visiting collaborators. Apart from this, we are relying on the generous contributions of all participants in terms of their time invested and in-kind resources. Currently we have no major funding source to pay technicians, students or our own time but we are seeking additional funding.

Old and rare publications about freshwater fishes of Chile

This is not a comprehensive list but contains many of the seminal references which are scattered in Chilean and international libraries. I apologize for the poor quality of many of the PDFs. These were photographs or photocopies I took during the course of my research. I provide the PDF in an ‘as it is’ condition assuming no responsibility for missing content, etc. I would appreciate if you could share your own copies of works not included here or included but in poor condition.

Some of these PDFs were too big to post online - please e-mail me with your request and these will be sent to you.

Enjoy,
Cristian Correa, 2009
