Research Interests:

Over the years I have maintained scientific activities in three fairly distinct fields of research. The first is global change biology in which I have worked almost continuously since my Ph.D. at Duke University in 1985. This was a time when most people doubted of the reality of climate change! This main research interest of mine evolved from physiological ecology to the study of ecosystem functions. I am also actively involved at the policy level. A second important area of research has been biostatistics. As an ecologist, I am convinced of the importance of appropriate analytical tools to unveil patterns observed in nature. Furthermore, I have collaborated extensively with Indigenous peoples in Panama - especially the Embera. The work carried out in cooperation with them focuses on conservation of plants used in a traditional way and on sustainable land uses.
