Bookstore
The main university bookstore is located at 3420 McTavish (514-398-7444). Course textbooks, stationery, as well as a variety of items with the McGill logo, prints of the University, etc. can be obtained from the bookstore.
Cafeteria
There is a Second Cup located in N2/3; there is also a cafeteria in the basement of the Law Building. The Second Cup offers hot soup, salads and sandwiches as well as an assortment of muffins, scones and cakes. The Law Building cafeteria has hot meals on a daily basis, sandwiches, salad bar and refreshments. Other facilities include the 5th floor of the Medical Building.
Coffee Room
The lounge (W4/11) is open to all members of the Biology Department. Fresh coffee is provided from a coin operated machine. In addition, there are 2 microwave ovens. Several current journals, reprints or papers published by staff members and graduate students, as well as other reading material, are available in the coffee room. Books and journals should not be removed from this area. A weekly Support Staff Coffee Hour is held each Friday at 10 a.m. Please see Ancil Gittens, Room W4/1 or 398-6400 if you wish to reserve the Coffee Room for an occasion.
Compressed Gas Cylinders
Monthly demurrage charges are paid on all cylinders. The University has agreements with two companies: Air Products Canada Ltd. and Les Gas Speciaux MEGS Inc., to supply compressed gas and related equipment/services. Researchers may use the company which offers the best price for their needs. Do not retain unused cylinders as monthly rental charges will apply. Delivery and pick-up of empty cylinders is on the platform behind Stores (N3/17).
Courier Service
The department uses the services of Federal Express and charges will be made to the users PCard. The user must make arrangements to send large packages through the Receiving Room (Stores) and envelopes and small packages through the Coordinator in Room W4/7.
Staff Identification Cards
The Staff I.D. Centre is located at 688 Sherbrooke Street, room 1520. The I.D. Centre is open from 8:30 – 4:30 from Monday or Wednesday and from 8:30– 12:00 on Friday. In order to obtain an I.D. card, staff members will be required to have a payroll number together with one other piece of identification such as a driver’s license, social insurance card, etc.
Vehicles
There are two vans owned by the Department. These vehicles are frequently in use, for both teaching and research purposes. A charge will be made to a FOAPAL for the use of a vehicle set by the Department. Requests for vans are heavy during the periods when there are departmental field courses at Mont St.Hilaire, as well as during the summer months when the camp at Lake Memphremagog is in use.
Reservations for the vans are made through the Coordinator in Room W4/7. The keys and the completed log must be returned to the office upon return from a trip. The fuel tank of a vehicle is to be at least 1/2 full and the vans should be cleaned, both inside and out, when returned. Damage or any other problems should be reported immediately to the Coordinator in Room W4/7.
If you have not driven the department vans previously, you must provide the department with a photocopy of your driver’s license (both front and back) along with your signature atleast two weeks prior to usage for insurance purposes.
Please note that it is illegal to transport radioactive/hazardous waste materials in the vans or any other public vehicle.
