A note concerning environmental conditions:

All Phytotron equipment is equipped with microprocessor/ computer controllers permitting accurate and flexible programming of environmental variables. It is important for users to remember that "unwanted" sources of variation do exist within and between different experimental units. Proper experimental design (blocking, replication & randomization) is recommended for all studies. For more information, consult the Links & References section.

Growth Chamber Zone - Supporting Equipment

The growth chamber harvest room is equipped with sinks & counter space for users to plant/prepare, measure and harvest experimental samples. Standard equipment available for users includes : Drying ovens, HEPA filtered cleanbench,  refrigerator, freezer, demineralized water, watering cans and fertilizer solutions (20-20-20 Plant-Prod & Hoagland's). A variety of pots, soil and soilless media are available for purchase - see List of Standard Supplies & Services for more information

Summer: air temperatures 5-8 °C below exterior ambient may be achieved with the addition of evaporative coolers & shade screens. Winter minimum temperature ~ 5 °C. Users are responsible for cost of CO2 gas & calibration.

Greenhouse Blackout Compartment

One greenhouse compartment has been retrofit with automated black-out curtain systems to permit the growth of daylength sensitive experiments. The primary characteristics are the same as for the standard compartment above.

The greenhouse headouse is equipped with sinks, soil interceptor & counter space for users to plant/prepare, measure and harvest experimental samples. Standard equipment available for users includes : Davis soil mixer, fumehood, soil sterilizer (electric heat), demineralized water, watering cans and fertilizer solutions (20-20-20 Plant-Prod & Hoagland's) . A variety of pots, soil and soilless media are available for purchase - see List of Standard Supplies & Services for more information.

Incidental Use Policy 

Incidental use of the McGill University Phytotron facility and its ancillary equipment is available to any member of the Biology Department. All persons interested in using the facility’s equipment must comply with the established registration, training and sign-up procedures including:

Completing a Phytotron Reservation Form

Receiving training by Phytotron staff (prior to using equipment)

bullet

Recording and reporting use (Sign-up on all relevant logsheets)

Notes: Access to the Phytotron facilities by incidental users will be limited to working hours. (Monday to Friday 9am-5pm) Access at all other times will only be available by special arrangement with the staff.
