The CIAN SAN

The CIAN is served by a storage-area network (SAN) from Apple Computer, which allows for high-speed, multi-client, simultaneous data storage and retrieval. Microscope and analysis workstations are connected by fibre-optic cables to a 14-terabyte Xserve RAID, theoretically effecting throughput of 200 MB/s (for comparison, standard 100BaseT, found in the Ethernet networks of most buildings, operates around 12 MB/s). Such speed is necessary when dealing with the large files typically generated by the CIAN. All user data stored on the RAID is protected at multiple levels from loss, and the RAID itself is located in a highly secured, environmentally regulated room.

Microscopy data can be stored on the server. Access to the server is free of charge for microscope users. Other users can to rent server space (100 GB increment) for 1, 6 or 12 month at low fees.
